Thakhek & Savannakhet Laos Travel Guide A Vagabond Life

Thakhek Loas and Savannakhet Laos are  towns on the Mekong River, both are on border crossings into Thailand and are also on some of the main routes leading from Thailand through to Vietnam.  To discover more on Laos border crossing click here.

Thakhek and Savannakhet while not high on tourist attractions they are both good places to break the long slow bus journey for a night when travelling down Laos toward the Four Thousand Islands and then onto Cambodia. The highlight for us in Thakek was a trip to Kong Lor Cave 130 km east of Thakek.

Things To See & Do In Thakhek & Savannakhet

Kong lor Cave

Laos Caves
Kong lor Cave

On the Nam Hin Bun River the cave travels 7kms through Krast formations and is incredible. Guides take you along the river in a boat through the pitch black cave stopping along the way at a huge area filled with stalagmites and stalactites. Local villagers sheltered in these incredible caves during the Vietnam war while the Americans dropped 1000’s of bombs on Laos. On the other side of the caves is a village in a valley – the only way out of the valley is through the cave. Now that’s remote.
