Three Weeks in Sofia: Bulgaria’s Charming Capital

Three Weeks in Sofia: Bulgaria’s Charming Capital

Golden cathedrals, ancient Roman ruins, serene parks, and surprisingly excellent international food

We spent three unforgettable weeks in Sofia, Bulgaria, and quickly fell in love with the city’s perfect blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy.

We were lucky to find a wonderful apartment close to the National Opera and Ballet. Its central location meant we could explore almost everything on foot, and the large windows offered a stunning view of the illuminated Alexander Nevsky Cathedral at night — a magical sight we never tired of.

One of the first places we visited was the magnificent Alexander Nevsky Cathedral itself. With its striking golden domes and intricate frescoes, it is the undisputed symbol of Sofia. The peaceful, hushed interior provided a beautiful contrast to the bustling streets outside.

We also explored the fascinating Serdica archaeological complex, where ancient Roman streets and buildings lie preserved beneath the modern city. Nearby, the Rotunda of St. George — one of Sofia’s oldest surviving buildings — impressed us with its well-preserved medieval frescoes.

Many afternoons were spent in Borisova Gradina, Sofia’s oldest and most beautiful park. With its manicured gardens, serene lakes, and shaded paths, it became our favourite place to relax, picnic, and watch locals enjoying their city.

Evenings were all about food. We were surprised to discover an outstanding Thai restaurant with authentic curries and pad thai that rivalled what we’d eaten in Bangkok. Equally excellent was a Japanese restaurant near our apartment, where the fresh sushi and rich ramen became regular favourites.

We also attended a performance at the National Opera and Ballet. The grand interior and outstanding talent made it a memorable cultural highlight of our stay.

Our three weeks in Sofia passed far too quickly. From ancient ruins and golden-domed cathedrals to peaceful parks and surprisingly great dining, the city offered the perfect mix of history, culture, and everyday charm. Sofia has earned a special place in our hearts and we can’t wait to return.
