Exploring Byron Bay: Lighthouse Hikes, Pub Lunches & Friends
Catching up with old friends, hiking Cape Byron, and reflecting on the town’s transformation
Byron Bay, with its laid-back charm and stunning coastal beauty, has always been one of our favourite spots in Australia. When the chance came to visit again, we were excited not only to enjoy the scenery but also to catch up with many friends who now call this corner of the world home.
Arriving in Byron felt like stepping into a postcard — warm air, impossibly blue skies, and golden beaches stretching into the distance. We kicked off our stay by meeting old friends at a relaxed beachside café, laughing and reminiscing as waves crashed nearby.
The next morning we tackled one of Byron’s iconic walks: the hike up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse. The trail winds through lush coastal rainforest with breathtaking ocean views at every turn. We reached the summit as the sun climbed higher, filling the coast with golden light. From the top we even spotted dolphins playing in the waves below — a magical reward for the climb.
After working up an appetite, we headed to the classic Byron Bay Hotel (known locally as “The Byron”) for a hearty pub lunch. We settled on the patio and enjoyed juicy burgers, fresh salads, and cold beers in the bustling atmosphere filled with surfers, locals, and tourists.
Later that afternoon we drove to nearby Mullumbimby, a quirky inland town with a strong artistic and bohemian vibe. We wandered through markets, admired handmade crafts, and chatted with friendly locals. It offered a lovely contrast to Byron’s energetic coastal scene.
As the day ended, we reflected on how much Byron Bay has changed over the years. What was once a sleepy, laid-back surf town has become significantly more popular, expensive, and crowded. While it still holds undeniable magic and beauty, the rapid transformation has brought a touch of nostalgia for its quieter past.
Byron Bay continues to enchant with its beautiful beaches, vibrant community, and iconic lighthouse. Catching up with friends, enjoying classic pub lunches, and exploring nearby Mullumbimby made this visit extra special, even as the town evolves.
