Krakow: How Did We End Up Here?
Our Unexpected Start to Summer 2024 in Poland
How did we end up in Krakow, Poland, you ask? A very good question indeed!
As we planned our Summer 2024 holiday, we knew we’d be heading east to explore countries that had long been on our bucket list, with a deadline to be in northern Greece by July 1st. One day AP casually asked, “What’s the furthest east we can fly out of Bordeaux on a budget airline?” A quick search later, we found Ryanair tickets to Krakow for just €50 each including luggage. “Bargain!” we said. “Let’s go to Poland!”
Our flight landed around 7 PM at the sleek and modern John Paul II International Airport. A quick taxi ride later, we arrived at our apartment in the Kazimierz district — the historic Jewish quarter. This beautiful area, with its ancient buildings and cobblestone streets, also has a vibrant café, bar, and food scene.
We had a full week in Krakow. Being the non-touristy travellers we are, we spent the first couple of days relaxing in local cafés, enjoying excellent coffee, and eating authentic Chinese and Vietnamese food — something we really miss in France.
By day three, after a fantastic Chinese lunch, we finally ventured into the main square and market hall in the Old Town. It was picture-perfect and bustling, but after one look at the crowds and touts, we circled the square, took a few photos, and happily returned to our quieter corner of the city.
Another day we walked along the Vistula River to the castle and church complex. Though beautiful, it was packed with school groups, so we found a shady spot with a cold drink instead.
We also loved exploring the small produce markets and food truck areas scattered around town.
Krakow surprised us in the best way. We found a beautiful, sophisticated city with excellent food, friendly people, and a great atmosphere. We loved our time there and will definitely return — next time for much longer.
Next stop: Banská Bystrica, Slovakia!
