3 Days in Stung Treng, Cambodia: A Slow Travel Itinerary

Stung Treng is one of Cambodia’s most underrated provinces — a peaceful riverside town where the Mekong meets the Sekong and Srepok rivers. Known for its dramatic waterfalls, pristine nature, and laid-back atmosphere, it serves as the perfect gateway between Cambodia and Laos. This 3-day slow travel itinerary helps you experience the best of Stung Treng without rushing.

Day 1: Arrival & Mekong Riverside Exploration

Ease into the relaxed pace of Stung Treng and discover its charming riverside life.

Morning

Arrive in Stung Treng and check into a riverside guesthouse. Start with a gentle walk along the Mekong River promenade.
Highlights: Watch local fishing boats, visit the colorful Stung Treng Market, enjoy fresh coffee at a riverside café
Afternoon: Boat trip to see the confluence of the three rivers (Mekong, Sekong, Srepok)
Evening: Sunset at the riverfront and dinner of fresh grilled fish
Stay at a guesthouse with river views (e.g. Golden River Hotel or similar). The town is very walkable and safe.
Day 2: Waterfalls & Nature Adventure

Stung Treng’s biggest draw — its powerful waterfalls and pristine nature.

Morning – Preah Rumkel Dolphin Sanctuary & Waterfalls

Early morning boat trip to see rare Irrawaddy dolphins (best chance in dry season).
Key Stops: Preah Rumkel (dolphins), Sopheak Mitt Waterfall (huge cascades), O’Romis Waterfall
Activity: Swimming in natural pools, short jungle hikes

Afternoon – O’Svay or Kbal Spean Area

Explore more remote waterfalls and enjoy a picnic lunch by the river.
Book a private boat + motorbike combo ($35–50 for the full day). Best from November to April when water levels allow good dolphin viewing.
Day 3: Local Life, Temples & Laos Border Option

Immerse yourself in local culture and decide whether to continue to Laos.

Morning: Visit Wat Phnom Chisor or local temples around town
Afternoon: Relax at a riverside café, try local specialties (grilled fish, amok, fermented fish)
Optional: Head to the Cambodia–Laos border (Trapeang Kriel) if continuing your journey
Stung Treng is one of the best places in Cambodia to see the rare Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins.
If heading to Laos, book a direct minivan to 4000 Islands the night before. Otherwise, enjoy one final sunset by the Mekong.
Disclaimer: Information accurate as of 2026. Boat and tour prices can vary by season. Always check current border rules if continuing to Laos. Support local boat drivers and guesthouses. Safe travels in Stung Treng!
