Arena de Verona

Arena de Verona

A beautiful preserved arena dating from 30AD this arena was famous even then for its shows and games, people came from miles around to watch the spectaculars. Originally built from whits and pink stone from Valpolicella much of the outer ring was destroyed by an earthquake in 1117.

Casa di Guilietta

For the romantics….Just of Via Capello is the 1300 era stone house that is said to have inspired Shakesperes Romeo and Juliet. The courtyard under the balcony has a bronzed much rubbed statue of Juliet and the high stone walls are covered with love notes. Book tickets on line – and be warned it gets very very busy.

Castel Vecchio

During Medieval times the Castel Vecchio was an important military installation that defended the city during the reign of the Scaliger dynasty. Utilitarian in nature the castle is simply a square compound with little decoration. It is a good example of the Gothic architecture of the time with seven towers, a superlevatated keep and a surrounding ditch that was once a keep. Today it houses the Castelvecchio Museum. Once the Roman Forum the Plaza is home to a number of important and histoical houses. On the northern side is the town hall, the Torre dei Lamberti nd the Judges hall. The north – western side you will find the ancient Roman Capitol Hill which looks toward the forum. The western side is Palazzo Maffei.
