Stung Treng Cambodia Travel Guide

Stung Treng is a smallish town that sits on the Mekong river in northeastern Cambodia. It is pretty remote and probably best described as a border ‘outpost’.

If you are travelling from Laos into Cambodia by the remote border crossing in far southern Laos you will have to pass through Stung Treng. Most buses stop here and shuffle passengers onto onward buses, either south to Phnom Penh or west to Angkor Wat. The buses stop at an insanely busy market which is pretty third world on the banks of the Mekong.

Most travellers stop long enough to change buses and move on to the more popular town of Kratie or continue on their journey.

Not a huge amount to see in Stung Treng, however, it is quite pleasant to break the journey here for a night and watch the sunset over the Mekong before moving on.

Stung Treng is a good jumping off point to see the critically endangered Irrawaddy Dolphins.
