CHIANG RAI
THAILAND
WE Discover Chiang Rai’s unique blend of Northern Thai culture, delightful eateries, and top attractions in this relaxing getaway amid stunning landscapes and rich ethnic heritage.
Chiang Rai, Thailand: A Relaxing Getaway with Northern Thai Flavors
Chiang Rai, the bustling capital of Chiang Rai Province in Northern Thailand, is a vibrant city with a population of around 62,000. As the main commercial hub for the Golden Triangle region, which borders Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, Chiang Rai offers a unique mix of Northern Thai culture and ethnic diversity, including a significant presence of Hill Tribes and Myanmar exiles.
Unlike its southern counterpart, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai stands out with its spicier cuisine and distinct cultural character. Having visited Chiang Rai before and seen most of its tourist attractions, this trip was more about unwinding, catching up on work, and indulging in authentic Northern Thai food. Although we skipped revisiting the main tourist sites this time, I’ve included my favorite spots at the end of this blog.
For this trip, we opted for an apartment rental instead of a hotel, staying at the charming Chiang Rai Condotel. This well-decorated apartment came equipped with a cooktop, microwave, and fridge—ideal for preparing breakfast and simple meals. Located within walking distance of the town center and the bustling night bazaar, it also had a daily market nearby where we could pick up fresh fruit.
We quickly settled into a pleasant routine, rediscovering our favorite eateries and exploring some new ones. Our new local favorite became Chiangrai Corner & Rico’s Bar, known for its fantastic authentic Thai dishes and surprisingly good red wine, all conveniently located just across the road from our apartment.
We also enjoyed a hearty Sunday roast dinner at Coconuts Bar, complete with baked potatoes, vegetables, and gravy. The night market provided another excellent dining option, offering a diverse selection of both Thai and Western foods, along with local entertainment each evening.
What to See and Do in Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai is home to many remarkable attractions and activities, and here are a few highlights:
Wat Phra Kaeo: This historic temple once housed the Emerald Buddha in the 14th century before it was moved to Bangkok.
The White Temple: An architectural marvel, this temple is a must-see. We explored it on a push bike tour, which was a delightful experience. Be sure to visit early to avoid the afternoon heat.
Hilltribe Museum: A fascinating place to learn about the diverse Hill Tribe communities and their cultures.
Homestay Experience: Staying with a Hill Tribe family offers a unique and memorable cultural immersion.
Waterfalls and Hot Springs: Kun Korn, a stunning 70-meter waterfall located about 15 km south of town, is a great spot for nature enthusiasts.
Golden Triangle Tour: Hire a private driver to explore the Golden Triangle, which features beautiful tea houses and plantations.
