Exploring the Saxon Villages of Romania
A Journey from Sighişoara
Based in the historic hilltop town of Sighişoara, we set out to explore the famous Saxon villages of Transylvania. These villages, founded by German-speaking Saxons in the 12th century, are renowned for their well-preserved medieval architecture and fortified churches.
Our first stop was **Viscri**, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This picturesque village, with its whitewashed houses and red-tiled roofs, felt like stepping back in time. Its beautifully restored fortified church is one of the most photographed in the region.
We continued to **Biertan**, home to another magnificent fortified church. Surrounded by strong defensive walls and towers, the church stands as a powerful reminder of the Saxons’ need for protection against invasions. Wandering the narrow streets and admiring the traditional houses was a highlight of the day.
Around midday we stopped at a cozy local eatery for a delicious lunch of hearty Romanian goulash, fresh bread, and sarmale (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat and rice). The simple, home-cooked food was comforting and full of flavour.
In the afternoon we visited several other Saxon villages, each with its own distinct charm. The combination of rolling hills, historic architecture, and peaceful rural atmosphere made the drive through the countryside incredibly scenic and enjoyable.
Exploring the Saxon villages from Sighişoara was one of the most rewarding parts of our time in Romania. The blend of rich history, stunning fortified churches, and traditional Transylvanian charm left us with lasting memories of this special corner of Europe.
